Son of the teacher at the General Assembly School at Ledaig, John Campbell grew up to achieve fame as the Bard of Ledaig. Whilst a young man he set up in business in Glasgow and developed a profound Christian character under the influence of Doctors Keddie and Bonar. Ill health forced a return to his roots where he opened a small store, ran the Post office and carried out the duties of sub-inspector of the poor. An Associate of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh, his general love of nature found expression in gardening enabling him to supply flowers, fruit and vegetables to Oban. His grandson, Colin, remembered delicious strawberries and gooseberries - and a pet robin. The Bard enjoyed long walks, returning inspired to sit at his desk overlooking the magnificent Ardmucknish Bay and write with Celtic passion on the subjects that moved him. The rock of the ancient Beregonium Fort - scene of Ossianic dramas and the Border poet, Hogg’s splendid ‘Queen Hynde*’ - guards the bay, providing a stimulus to the poetic imagination. The Ledaig Bard possessed a genial, hospitable personality that won him a countrywide circle of friends. He received many honours, including Fellowships of numerous Celtic, Scientific and Literary Societies. An enthusiastic Bard of Clan Campbell, John wrote mainly in his native Gaelic. He co-founded An Comunn Gaidhealach and his songs still find favour at mods. Famous for the 'classroom in the cave.' |
